Getting Out of a Poverty Mindset

A poverty mindset is one of lack. It’s when you are focused on what’s missing in your life, rather than on your good fortune and the possibilities that exist. This type of thinking can manifest in a bunch of different ways. It happens when you don’t feel like there’s enough, you’ll never get ahead, you don’t deserve more, or that taking a risk is dangerous. Essentially, living in this state involves limitations. When you think this way, you begin to live in this same manner. The key to finding and embracing abundance is getting out of a poverty mindset. Follow these tips to get started.

Watch Your Language

What you tell yourself tends to become your reality. Be careful with your words. Take note when you catch yourself saying something like, “I’ll never be able to afford that.” These types of messages can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Instead, reframe the message by turning it into something more positive and realistic. Perhaps consider reminding yourself that a promotion is possible in your future, which could lead to more opportunities and options for your life. Be positive with your words.

Be Open to New Experiences

If you’re bored with life and feeling stuck, it’s not likely you’ll find yourself in a place of abundance. You should try to change things up a bit. Try something new you’ve always wanted to do, even a small change in the environment or circumstance can make a difference. Giving a new restaurant a try might lead to a shift in mindset, or heading out for a picnic by the lake could give you just the peaceful perspective you’ve been craving.

Avoid Comparison and Competition

One of the great contributors to a poverty mindset is comparing yourself to others. Just because someone else can take an exotic vacation doesn’t mean your life is any less full or meaningful. Rather than feel jealous or sad, try to wish others well in their experiences. Then return to being grateful for the good things you have in your life. It’s even possible to use the experience of others to motivate you. For instance, try to figure out what it is about your friend’s vacation that has led you to feel a lack. Then use that insight to push yourself to obtain what it is you seek. Maybe you can’t afford a major getaway, but that weekend trip to the lake could suffice.

Once you start, you’ll start seeing things in a whole new light that can open up a world of possibilities.
